The Right Key Doesn’t Open Every Door. It Opens Yours.

A friend once handed me a ring of nearly thirty keys and asked me to unlock a storage unit.

Some looked brand new. Others had clearly opened thousands of doors. Standing there, I realized something simple: twenty-nine of those keys were worthless. The only one that mattered was the key cut for that particular lock.

That’s what comes to mind whenever someone asks me, “Mike, what’s the best franchise?”

This is when I answer: What kind of life are you trying to unlock?

Every franchise is built for a different purpose. The mistake isn’t choosing a “bad” franchise. It’s choosing the right key for someone else’s door.

Different Franchise Models Unlock Different Goals

In reality, there are different business models built for different goals, personalities, and seasons of life. The right franchise isn’t the one everyone else is buying. It’s the one that fits where you want your life to go.

Three Locks People Forget to Check

Over the years, I’ve seen three mistakes appear again and again.

#1 Buying someone else’s dream. Your friend’s franchise may fit their schedule, finances, and ambitions perfectly. That doesn’t mean it belongs in your life.

#2 Assuming bigger means better. Well-known brands have advantages, but newer concepts sometimes offer stronger territories, more support, or greater room for growth. Brand recognition is only one piece of the puzzle.

#3 Ignoring the owner’s job. People often ask about revenue before asking what ownership actually requires. Who manages employees? How involved are you? What happens on weekends? The owner’s role matters just as much as the numbers.

Evolution Isn’t Reinvention

I think of business ownership as evolution.

Evolution isn’t becoming someone different. It’s becoming more of who you’re capable of becoming.

For some families, that means replacing a corporate paycheck. For others, it’s creating another income stream or building something their children can someday inherit.

Different destinations.

Different doors.

Different keys.
